- OUR STORY – The story of Patagonia Proteins began in 2022 when its founder, Walter Siebert, notices that quality of plant-based protein supplements was bad, and not even tasty at all, meaning that protein isolates were containing everything but mostly not protein. After almost two years of development and experimenting with the most singular ingredients, we crafted our first product. Patagonia Proteins are made from lupine beans natively grown and harvested in Northern Patagonia, which impressively deliver a 76% of protein concentration and reach a PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score) of ~0.9 which is a top tier index for a plant-based protein.
- WHAT IS LUPINE? – The lupine bean is a superfood that has the highest concentration of grain protein in the world. The most ancient evidence of lupine consumption dates back 4,000 years ago during the 12th dynasty of ancient Egypt. Most recently, the Andean American variety of this lupine bean, was domesticated by pre-Incan inhabitants of present-day Peru. Nowadays, lupine plants are under widespread cultivation around the world, including Northern Patagonia, where fertile soil and purest rains grow one of the best lupine varieties in the world. In Patagonia Proteins we are committed to delivering the best plant-based protein from the most remote part of the world.

The protein powder arrived on time. The plastic bottle has a security seal under the cap, however, mine was damaged with powder noticeable above the seal. The bottle also had product on the outside of it; not from the container, I don’t think, but probably from adjacent bottles being filled on the line. Hopefully, not an indication of poor sanitary conditions in the filling operation. The product mixes well with water, and after shaking for less than 30 seconds, was fully dissolved. The cookies and cream flavor was ok, more creme than cookies and results in a thick, milkshake like consistency which is pleasant to drink. Instead of using a large shaker bottle, i dispensed the product into a gatorade bottle, filling partially to the recommended 10 to 12 oz. recommendation. The product was filling and although not quite the cookies and creme flavor I have tasted from other protein shakes, was ok. I recommend the product as advertised.

Overall, I cannot recommend this plant-based protein powder. I am usually a huge fan of banana protein shakes. Unfortunately, this protein misses the bar in a few key areas. First is quality control. When I first opened the protein powder, the seal was detached from the lid in an area about 2cm wide. Unlike others, I didn’t have any spilling of protein powder – but the lack of a proper seal is far from ideal. After mixing it up according to the directions and taking a drink, I initially liked the flavor. However, after a few seconds, a very unpleasant aftertaste came. I tried several more times but was eventually unable to continue.

I got the cookies and cream version and it smells like burnt popcorn and tastes even worse. The product did not mix well and I was getting sick like from the smell and gross taste that I dumped it all.
I have tried other protein powders where they mix and are generally fine but have a chalky/paste like taste to them so I thought I would try a different company and flavor from chocolate. That was a mistake.

I’ve tried a lot of the plant-based protein powders and they usually either taste bad or they lack the nutritional value I look for (high protein per calorie).
This is the first plant based protein powder I’ve tried that does not taste chalky and digests really well.
I blend it with water, ice, and some organic peanut butter and wow, it tastes delicious.
I highly recommend it. I’ve purchased it 3 times already and will continue to use it.

This is seemingly a rather new company and product that has to make some changes before I would recommend it. The first of the issues is the packaging. The seal on top of the tub arrived completely broken off of the top, and the powder was left open with only the lid keeping it inside. This made me not want to try it at all, as there is risk involved with open consumables when being shipped. I decided to give it a go anyway, despite the smell being pretty questionable. I know this is a commonality in vegan protein powder, and I’m not necessarily knocking it for that, just thought I’d mention it. As far as flavor and solubility, it is better than a lot of vegan protein powders, but the flavor is still pretty underwhelming. The PDCAAS being 76% is pretty nice for a vegan protein powder, and something that I often don’t see people consider. I’m not entirely sure if that’s enough to convince me to switch to lupine, though, as soy is still better I’d probably stick with that. I know a lot of people are scared of soy because of phytoestrogens, which is pointless as they don’t actually change your hormones significantly, but hey to each their own. If you’ve got an aversion to soy and pea protein and want to pay significantly more for an alternative that’s realistically about the same, this is a good option for you.
