Pea protein if you haven’t had it, has a kind of vegetal/beany flavor – it’s made from peas after all. I usually bake it into protein bars where it is masked by other flavors. It’s not something I would want straight up unflavored in a drink. Since this is plant based, it has the potential to absorb heavy metals from the soil, so it matters where it is grown. Organic or not, it can contain higher levels of heavy metals and other inorganics that are not desirable from a health standpoint in them. I asked Nutricost where they grow their peas for this protein and if they share results from the lab analysis. They responded pretty quickly to say that they test the raw materials and the finished product with third party ISO-accredited laboratories for heavy metals, biological, organoleptic and FT-IR analysis and only provide on the label what is necessary to meet regulatory requirements and everything else is proprietary and confidential. Some other brands DO share that information and do so out of transparency and pride of their ingredient quality.

This pea protein from Nutricost is a simple and clean product with just one ingredient – pea protein isolate. It’s billed as unflavored, but it does have a taste of some sort; not off-putting but it is there. At least it doesn’t have a strong smell, unlike a previous pea protein I tried from a different brand. I mixed this powder with another, flavored vegan protein so as to get a mix of plant proteins. If you are looking for an unflavored pea protein I would definitely recommend this as an option.

I’ve had my fair share of different types of protein powders and especially pea protein as it’s usually the more cost-effective one so I can say compared to most other products, this is good. I can usually trust Nutricost for selling decent protein powder at a really fair price and this is more of the same. 1lb containers are great for you to see if you like it, which I was sure of anyways, but it is there for those on the fence. You can’t really go wrong with most Nutricost protein products because they generally deliver and at a great value.

Packaged in the USA. 3rd part tested.
The product is fine to mix in with smoothies, stews, etc. It has no real significant taste of its own.
I’ve also used other Nutricost products. They are a well known supplement maker with many products on bestproteinpowder4women.net, with thousands of very good reviews.
One thing to note, there is a 5 lb version of this same product from Nutricost. It has a large number of generally good reviews. The cost per ounce is much less than this version.

If you are like me and cannot stomach whey protein, you’ve probably looked to alternative protein sources like this one. Pea protein is a very strong option in that regard. While significantly less bioavailable than whey or other animal proteins, pea protein still packs a large amount of protein per serving. I’ve been mixing it into my morning shake, and it taste wise is not the best, but that is expected with pea proteins. The specific pre-protein is less gritty than others I’ve had, which is nice.

This blends well in a blender with other ingredients like milk, stevia, or fruit. I appreciate that it is unflavored, and I can’t taste it when mixed properly (because sometimes, even unflavored items can have an unpleasant taste). However, I have been making high-protein smoothies, and this works perfectly for that. I haven’t tried mixing it with just a spoon or a shaker, but blending it thoroughly in a regular blender took less than five seconds. I’d repurchase this if it were on sale. I also like that it didn’t cause any bloating or gas like some pea protein mixes have in the past.

I have tried countless protein powders. Usually pea protein powders will add some disgusting fake sweetener to cover the not so pleasant pea protein flavor. I prefer it straight with no additives. For me the flavor isn’t that bad and the powder is easy to add to soups, especially pea and bean-based. It’s also easy to add to smoothies. This is a super fine powder that blends very easily with water. I would say it blends more easily than whey protein blends or whey isolates.
