   I am one that likes trying new protein powders, and the new wave of plant based ones have been a constant hit or miss for me. I will note that over the years I have used A LOT of protein powders (whey, beef, pea, and plant based) for both post workout and as an afternoon smoothie for a snack. I saw this one and was immediately intrigued by the flavor combination of turmeric and vanilla. I have used turmeric in cooking for mid-Eastern and African dishes, so I am very familiar with the flavor, and wanted to see how it would pair with the vanilla. The color of the protein powder caught me a little off guard with the orangish tan color, though it blended up nice and smooth. I decided to try it with one of my classic combinations of peanut butter and banana with 8 ounces of almond milk, though the taste that overpowered everything else was cinnamon and cardamom. I literally couldn’t taste anything else. It was also extremely chalky to the point where my whole mouth felt coated in chalk powder. Then the sticky feeling hit the back of my throat and I was left with a heavy salt and pepper. I couldn’t even finish the smoothie, and even 2 glasses of water later I couldn’t fully get rid of that back of the throat taste. While others may have a different reaction and experience, this was a huge miss for me.

   Sounds good on the surface with all these nutrients but the makers have traded health over flavor. I don’t mind purchasing e.g. chocolate protein powder that has some additional nutrients where the chocolate masks those tastes. Not so for Superoot Golden Protein. The powder smells a bit like a boxed pancake mix but once you add it to water it’s a mess – tumeric colors everything so any small spills are like powdered orange ink. The flavor is unappealing, has a slight bit of sweetness but you feel like you’re getting bombarded by an a cocktail of flavors that don’t belong together.

   I was actually pretty excited to try this protein powder since there is so many benefits with taking it. If only I could get myself to swallow it. First I mixed it with my lactose free chocolate milk and even though I mixed according to the instructions, it was way too sweet and made my chocolate milk taste gross. It says it’s turmeric and vanilla flavor but the turmeric is so overpowering. I then proceeded to try mixing it with water so I could know how sweet the powder is. It turned the water into a sweet drink but it wasn’t pleasant because of the overpowering turmeric and the aftertaste it left in my mouth. The other thing is packaging. The zip on the package doesn’t work so I had to change it to another zippered bag. Also I didn’t know a scoop was included until I switched the powder to another bag and felt the scoop hidden in the powder. At first I was using my own measuring spoon because I didn’t find the scoop. Maybe it can be mentioned that the scoop is included on the packaging.

   The flavor of this product is going to likely be the deciding factor for most, though I do love that this product is going for the more natural ingredients approach. Overall, the most significant flavor in this product is cinnamon and some chalkiness. The flavor is fine, but it’s not something I can see myself buying again (especially not one of those larger containers that protein usually comes in). The portioning on this is a bit strange, I think the company is nailing down the details of exactly how much powder equals one serving (1.5 scoops is a bit annoying, give us a scoop that’s either 1 serving or half a serving!) However, for 22g of protein, it’s a reasonable amount. If anyone is giving this a shot, I’d suggest watering down the ingredients a bit more than the recommended amount for the flavor. Otherwise, this is a great alternative protein for those that are natural ingredient conscious!

   This plant-based protein powder mixes smoothly and has a mild flavor that reminds me of golden milk. It’s not overly sweet, which I appreciate, and it’s easy to blend into shakes or smoothies. The non-dairy formula feels light but still filling. The packaging was secure, and everything arrived fresh. A nice option for a natural protein boost. Not only does this dissolve well but it really does taste like golden milk. I love to add a bit of Cacao powder and some ripe bananas to this. It’s delicious.

   I like the clean ingredients, the nutritional profile, and the non dairy aspect of this protein powder but unfortunately I just can’t get used to the taste. I try to be reasonable when judging the taste of nutritional supplements given that I am using them for nutritional purposes – not as desert or as comfort snacks. But in this case, the taste of this powder would make it hard to choose this product over similar ones.

   This is definitely not the typical protein mix—even for vegan stuff, so if you’re looking for that, you probably won’t be happy with this, but it has unique ingredients that you may be looking for to improve digestion and lower inflammation, so those are great. Being plant protein, it has that gritty texture that’s not nearly as smooth as whey. And while vegan protein mixes can taste delicious, they have the cards stacked against them by adding the herbals and turmeric. I really love turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties, but it does have a distinct flavor and not everyone is going to like that. I love that they use stevia because it’s healthy, but it too isn’t the best-tasting sweetener. It’s also not the ideal nutrition. It doesn’t have a ton of essentials and just has the added herbals. It is a good value though if you want those herbals and don’t mind the earthy flavor.

   The flavor is kind of ok. The turmeric is there, but not overpowering. A little bit of pollen/flower like flavor. The vanilla is definitely carrying this. In some ways it is nice though, and it has grown on me a bit. It helps to mix it very well, to get a smoother drink. Lots of foam is formed. Some parts still settle out, so it requires regular shaking to avoid lots of grit at the end. The feel is very chalky no matter how well you mix it though. Mixes fine with water. I tried some milk, but it didn’t seems to change much.
